Cow takes shows by storm
Strandview Storm Bjerg, the winning animal, was bred by Tom McGee in Co Louth, and was purchased last year by the Curtins.
The family has enjoyed great success with the cow at shows this year, taking the red rosette in Ennis, Nenagh and Cappamore, and a second in her class at Tullamore.
The Curtins’ reserve champion, Daleview Form Royalty, was bred by Roy Cromie in Castlefin, Co Donegal.
In the horse classes, White Carnation, a two year old Irish Draught mare, bred and exhibited by James Duffy, Kilmovee, Co Mayo, and shown by Adrian Hurst, Lisbellaw, Co Fermanagh, won the Aughinish Limerick Lady championship, organised by the Show Society and the Hunter Improvement Society of Ireland (HISI).
She is by Carrabawn View, out of Knockatober Lass, and qualified at Westport Show. The reserve champion, Yardfield Goldie, a qualifier from Charleville Show, is by Big Sink Hope, out of Yardfield Rosie, and was bred and exhibited by Fred Bourke, Clonlara, Co Clare.
Lady Anne Hemphill, who judged the final with James Burke, Innishannon, Co Cork, said the top six mares in the final were very impressive. The winning mare in particular had good substance and if put to a good thoroughbred horse will hopefully do very well.
The Aughinish Limerick Matron championship was won by Derry Rothwell, Tinahely, Co Wicklow, with a seven year old, which he bred himself.
Joe McCarthy, Emmett Square, Clonakilty, Co Cork, won the Irish Draught two year old Aughinish filly championship with an animal that qualified at Bandon Show and was bred by John Dillon, Rosscarbery.
