Russian breakthrough could open up new markets for beef

THE beef industry could see new markets opening up after Russia’s decision to lift restrictions on beef from cattle born in certain counties.

Agriculture and Food Minister Joe Walsh yesterday described the Russian breakthrough as excellent news at an important time for the cattle and beef sector.

He said it showed that Russia, which is very sensitive about the safety of the food it buys, acknowledged that Ireland has a thorough system of BSE controls in place.
