Farmers must resist low lamb price

Farmers should be in no rush to sell lamb at lower prices, says IFA sheep committee chairman Laurence Fallon.

Despite a stable market in France and strong prices in Britain, the Irish lamb factories have tried to pull back prices without justification, he said.

He said some factories paid up to €3.65/kg (130p/lb) for lambs this week and were trying to move their quotes as low as €3.44/kg (123p/lb).

He said lamb supplies are tight and farmers should resist selling at the lower prices. The British market is very strong at €3.75/kg (134p/lb) and the French market is returning up to €3.65/kg (130p/lb).
