Ireland wants a taste of China’s food market

BORD BIA has cast an envious eye on China’s large and fast growing market for food products.

It will be among 100 international exhibitors and more than 200 of China’s major meat companies at Meat Industry China, which opens in Beijing tomorrow and continues until Sunday.

The Bord Bia exhibition will promote an awareness of Ireland as a significant exporter of food and drinks.

It is also geared towards developing trade links between Chinese buyers and Irish food suppliers, strengthening links with the Chinese authorities and improving market access for Irish companies.

Bord Bia has carried out a number of market visits and research projects in China during the past three years.

It concluded the main barriers to expanding trade with China was the lack of awareness of Ireland as a source of high-quality food and the need to have agreements and understandings on regulatory and veterinary issues.

The China meat industry exhibition will be complemented by a day-long symposium featuring a range of key private and public sector decision-makers from China.

Bord Bia’s director of international markets Paddy Moore will address the symposium in his capacity as President of the International Meat Secretariat.

Bord Bia said China was a large and fast growing food market spurred on by rapid economic growth, increased industrialisation and a move towards a more western diet. “There is a favourable outlook for food imports into China over the medium term,” said a Bord Bia spokesperson.”
