Ex-ICMSA leader’s death brings sadness

He was involved in representing his fellow farmers for almost 60 years and served as ICMSA president from 1981 to 1989.

Mr Kelly, who was from Curraghpoor, Co Tipperary, was a director of the Irish Dairy Board and a member of the European Economic and Social Committee.

ICSMA president Pat O’Rourke said Mr Kelly would be remembered with fondness and respect by all Irish farmers. He was one of the great farm leaders over the last 50 years.

“Sean Kelly experienced the harshness of farming in the ’50s and ’60s, which gave him a great strength to defend the interests of family farms and a deep appreciation of the co-operative movement.

“However, he was always willing to respond to new opportunities and to adopt change when in the interest of farm families.

“The courage of his leadership, which he shared with the farm leaders of his generation, continues to provide inspiration.”
