Watch this abandoned turtle making a break for the ocean

A turtle has been caught on camera making a break for it in Cork city.

Jim Coughlan was on the marina in Blackrock when he spotted one of the critters in the grass next to the Atlantic Pond.

He had escaped from the pond, according to Jim, who couldn’t resist filming it as it trekked through the undergrowth to the River Lee and ocean beyond.

There are believed to be hundreds of them in the pond.

RTE did a recent documentary as part of their ’Wild Cities’ series, in which they blamed the phenomenon on a turtle craze in the 80s which came on the back of the Teenage Mutant Hero Turtle movies.

As a result, many unwanted turtle pets were released into the pond.
