Over several days now in the wake of the Anglo Tapes, I have heard many politicians saying to the media, “What the people want is...”, as they prattle on instead to tell us what it is that they actually want.

Following the publication of the Anglo tapes, we now have every politician grandstanding for an inquiry into banking.

How can we be surprised that we are back in recession when this Government hasn’t put any real strategic emphasis on stimulus programmes or investment in job creation?

I read with mounting dismay Diarmaid O’Flynn’s report on the Cork v Clare MSH semi-final (Irish Examiner, Jun 24).

What with the Clare Daly TD rant against An Taoiseach, President Obama and his family, leprechauns and the world in general being given wide reportage how interesting that Colette Browne on the Vincent Browne Show on TV3 (Jun 19) when asked if she agreed with the Clare Daly comments never hesitated — yes she agreed.

President John F Kennedy ended his inaugural speech in Jan 1960 by saying that “here on earth God’s work must truly be our own.”

It is nothing short of a national disgrace that in 2013 we are still talking about holding an inquiry into the activities of the banking sector in the years leading up to the giving of the guarantee of the 28th day of September 2008, when the need to get to the bottom of the mess was obvious to all that very day.

The revelations on the Anglo Irish tapes demand correct action.
