Newspaper reports this week show that Gerry Adams seems to have a uniquely clear appreciation of what did and did not go on in the IRA, describing as he does “their acting as a police force, IRA members were singularly ill equipped to deal with such matters. The IRA on occasions shot alleged sex offenders or expelled them. While this may have been expedient at the time, it was not appropriate”.

Minister needs to ask questions about Gaza reconstruction

The Irish government has joined with other states in pledging money for the reconstruction of Gaza, however, when Ireland had the opportunity to take a stand for justice for the people of Gaza being relentlessly bombed during Israel’s 52 day assault this summer, Minister Flanagan instead chose to abstain on a United Nations vote calling for an investigation into Israel’s war crimes.

No similarity between Israeli and Russian actions

Perhaps the answer to Gordon Cunningham’s query as to why the Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan was so vocal in his call for sanctions against Russia, and not against Israel (Letters, October 20), is the tacit recognition by the government that the imperative behind the two actions was different.

On 31 March of this year the Constitutional Convention recommended to the Government, by an overwhelming majority of 85%, that economic, social and cultural (ESC) rights, such as healthcare, housing and social security, be given enhanced protection in the Irish Constitution.
