Google Pixel Watch 5 review: Gemini intelligence and the definitive wearable upgrade

Since their initial release, I’ve seen the Pixel Watch evolve from a fashionable but battery-constrained smartwatch into one of the best Android smartwatches to date. The Google Pixel Watch 5 (45mm) is a huge leap forward in power management, daily performance, and intelligence, making it the most capable and reliable Pixel Watch yet.

Google has kept their stylish dome-shaped case. Google fans will find it familiar yet refined. My 45mm review unit, featuring the matte black aluminium case and obsidian active band, feels premium and balanced. At 45mm across, the size gives a robust presence without feeling overly large. If you have more elegant wrists than mine, there’s also a smaller 41mm case. The case is made from 100% recycled aluminium, which is a thoughtful, modern detail.
For wearability, the new HNBR active band was surprisingly comfortable. I’ve worn it for several weeks now, and it never caused any irritation. The watch itself is fairly lightweight at 36.7g, and its rounded profile means it slides easily into a pocket or under a cuff without snagging.
The 41mm version comes in four colours, but the 45mm variant comes in only three, missing the champagne gold case.

The 360 LTPO AMOLED display is stunning and right up there with what I’d expect at this price. The screen can get intensely bright, hitting up to 3,000 nits. I tested this outdoors on several occasions, and reading notifications or even just checking the time was crystal clear, even under harsh midday sun. It also has a variable refresh rate (1Hz to 60Hz), which contributes to its overall smoothness and efficiency.
App lists, detailed workout summaries, and even the constant stream of information from 'At a Glance' are clear and easy to read on the display.

The new Snapdragon processor, paired with increased RAM and a doubled 64GB of internal storage, makes the watch feel fast and snappy, a noticeable improvement over the occasional lag I experienced with the previous version. Everything, from opening Google Wallet to launching apps, happens almost instantly.
I spent several weeks testing the Pixel Watch 5 under demanding conditions, including the always-on display enabled, constant quick checks, and lots of GPS cycling trips and map navigation, and the battery life was outstanding. Even after what I would consider a heavy day of use, I still had a healthy charge remaining. In real-world use, I was able to get two days and even three days with a little help from the battery saver. Of course, this is with the 45mm model, so you can expect less from the 41mm version.
The Pixel Watch 5 is also one of the fastest-charging watches I’ve tested, reaching 50% in about 15 minutes and 100% in about 60 minutes. The endurance upgrade alone justifies the purchase for anyone coming from an older model.

While the dual-frequency GPS hardware isn’t an upgrade over the Pixel Watch 4, Google has improved the software to deliver tangible gains. During an almost hour-long GPS cycle, the recorded route was incredibly reliable. It maintained a stable line along straight stretches and followed the path accurately, correcting for urban interference in a way that made a noticeable difference compared to previous models. I really enjoy reading the detailed analysis after a cycle or workout. However, unlike my Apple Watch, which prompts me to track a cycling activity and automatically pauses and resumes it, the Pixel Watch 5 isn’t as responsive. Most of the time, it doesn’t detect the activity, which is annoying, especially when you forget to start tracking it manually.
The new Google Health app offers a comprehensive suite of features, and most of them are available on the free plan. Beyond standard heart rate and blood oxygen readings, the new Health Guardian safety feature monitors for breathing emergencies and adds a crucial safety element. I also love the weekly health report and daily readiness score, but the monthly reports on blood pressure trends and insulin resistance levels are not yet available in Ireland.
In theory, fall detection is a great feature, but I regularly got false detections. The first time this happened, I was driving and didn’t know what it was. I panicked a little, but it gives you 60 seconds to respond by tapping “I’m okay,” and then it asks whether you fell or if it was a false alarm. It has even happened while I was sitting, which is odd. The crazy part is that when I tried to simulate a fall, it didn’t detect it. Eventually, I had to turn the feature off.
It's no surprise that the biggest shift is the integration of Gemini. The Raise to Talk feature enables hands-free interaction, such as setting alarms, checking calendar details, or even starting a workout simply by lifting the wrist. You also get proactive suggestions, which means the watch anticipates your needs. For example, if I got a message asking for a flight number, the information was ready to display without me having to pull out my phone. These AI additions turn the watch from a simple display into a really helpful companion to my phone, and I found myself using them far more than I expected.
There’s nothing new about double-pinch and wrist-turn gestures on a smartwatch, but Google are fully committed to these interactions, with little animations popping up constantly to remind you of their existence. I have to admit these reminders work and have made managing notifications and app navigation feel fluid and natural, making the device more hands-free whether I'm cooking or navigating a busy street.
While there’s a good selection of watch faces, one of my favourite features is the AI watch face generator. I liked it more than I expected, and it’s a great way to freshen up the look with a few simple steps and best of all, you do it directly on the watch, so it’s quick and easy.
The Google Pixel Watch 5 is a highly refined device. The 45mm version offers the best balance of screen real estate, aesthetics, and battery performance. For daily users, its superior endurance, Gemini integration, and accurate GPS make it a clear winner.
