Huawei FreeClip 2 review: Open-ear earbuds that fit real life, not just your ears

Huawei’s FreeClip 2 open-ear earbuds double down on comfort, awareness and everyday usability. Older generations of open earbuds were bulky and sounded poor, but now you can have style, comfort, and good sound quality in one package.
The ear-clip style FreeClip 2 joins an ever-increasing number of earbuds that are gaining incredible momentum for all the right reasons. Rather than sitting inside the ear canal, each bud gently clips onto the ear, resting just outside. It looks unusual at first, but it makes sense in use. Huawei is clearly leaning into these being wearable accessories as much as audio devices, and I think that works.
Each earbud weighs just 5.1g and feels almost weightless once in place. The design is symmetrical too, meaning there is no left or right bud. You simply clip one on, and it automatically figures out the channel. That sounds like a small thing, but in day-to-day use, it makes life easier.
Colour choices include Blue, White, Rose Gold and Black, which are the ones I received for this review.
The FreeClip 2 are really comfy because nothing goes into your ear canal, there is no pressure build-up, no ear fatigue and no need to constantly readjust. I have worn these for hours at a time without feeling the urge to take them off.
This open-ear approach has made them my go-to earbuds around the house. I can listen to a podcast while doing chores and still hear the door chime, the kettle boiling or someone calling from another room.
They also feel secure. Even on longer walks, the clip design keeps them firmly in place without feeling tight or intrusive.
Huawei has packed in plenty of smart features. The FreeClip 2 uses an NPU AI processor that is significantly more powerful than its predecessor. In practice, this enables adaptive volume, real-time awareness and improved voice enhancement.
There is also IP57 dust and water resistance, which gives confidence when wearing them outdoors, exercising lightly or getting caught in the rain. They feel built for everyday life rather than something you need to be precious about.
Call quality is boosted by a three-microphone system and AI noise reduction. Voices come through clearly, even with traffic or background noise nearby. However, callers said my voice sounded a little robotic and distant.
One of my favourite features is drop detection, which alerts you if you accidentally drop an earbud. I discovered it when my hood brushed against the left bud and knocked it out. I immediately heard an audible alert in the right earbud.
Battery life is good, especially considering the size and weight of each bud. Huawei rates the FreeClip 2 at up to 38 hours in total with the charging case. In real use, I have found them more than capable of lasting several days of casual listening without needing a top-up.
The case itself is compact enough to live in a bag or jacket pocket, and charging has been consistent and reliable. For an open-ear design, battery anxiety has not been an issue.
The Huawei AI Life app adds extra features. From here, you can tweak sound settings, manage gestures and keep firmware up to date. It is clean, easy to navigate and feels well thought out.
Sound profiles can be adjusted depending on whether you are listening to music, podcasts or taking calls. While the FreeClip 2 is designed to work well out of the box, the app gives you useful control if you want to fine-tune things.
Gesture controls are configurable in the app and include tap and swipe. They work well, and I love the swipe-up/down gesture for volume control.
Sound quality is impressive for open-ear earbuds. The dual-driver system delivers decent volume and bass. Vocals are clear and well-separated, making podcasts and audiobooks particularly enjoyable.
Music sounds open and natural rather than punchy or aggressive. Bass is present but not overpowering, which feels appropriate given the design. You are never going to get the same depth as sealed in-ear buds, but that is not the point here.
What I enjoy most is how the sound blends into your surroundings. On walks, I can listen to music while still hearing birds singing and footsteps on gravel. It makes the experience feel more connected and relaxed, rather than isolating.
The Huawei FreeClip 2 are very comfortable, practical and beautifully designed. If awareness and all-day wear matter more than isolation, these are easy to recommend.
