iPhone feature to appear in many smartphones next year

Many smartphone manufacturers look set to take inspiration from Apple's 3D Touch display, according to component analysts IHS.

iPhone feature to appear in many smartphones next year

Apparently, Apple struck a chord by equipping the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus with a pressure-sensitive screen. So much so that a quarter of high- and mid-level smartphones shipped next year could feature the technology, according to component analysts IHS.

It does seem likely that the likes of Sony, Samsung, HTC, and LG would want to implement this technology. But could we see it at CES in January or Mobile World Congress in March?

The technology lets you interact with your smartphone differently depending on how hard you press on the screen. You can preview mails or messages, for example, without opening them, or skip to a specific part of an app.

Just three phones feature pressure sensitive screens at the moment, the Huawei Mate S, the iPhone 6S, and the iPhone 6S Plus, though Apple prefers to call the feature "3D Touch."

Expect to hear a lot more about pressure sensitive screens in the coming year.
