Malware may target iOS and Macs in 2016

Windows users are all-too-familiar with malware and virus attacks, but iOS and Mac users may have to brace themselves for an onslaught in 2016.

Security firm FireEye maintains that Macs and MacBooks may become more frequent targets in 2016 thanks to their growing popularity. But mobile device users may also have to be vigilant.

FireEye has warned that hackers have found weaknesses in Apple's system and are ready to exploit them. It highlighted the Masque Attack back in 2014, which made it possible to replace legitimate apps with malicious ones. And the App Store has come under attack of late too, a trend that's only likely to increase.

FireEye's Bryce Boland, who wrote the paper titled 'Looking Forward: The 2016 Security Landscape,' also noted that Apple Pay and payment systems of that ilk are also likely to become targets in the coming year.

But it's not all doom and gloom. Symantec's Dick O'Brien acknowledged that while there have been many more OS X malware infections in 2015 compared to 2014, " Apple remains a relatively safe platform." Apple users can be less complacent however about security and malware in the future.
