The album only plays on a 1983 console

Chiptune music was already pretty strange and niche, given that it's all about making sounds from early gaming consoles using their sound chips, but this takes it to a whole new level.

A new album called 8 Bit Music Power is coming out on the 31st of January and it features some classic sounding tracks with all the twanging goodness you expect from Chiptune. The kicker this time is that the album will be available on a cartridge and not just any cartridge - one that will only play in the original Nintendo Famicom which released in Japan in 1983.

How's that for hipster?

The chunky plastic box will of course contain all of that music delight as well as a menu and the ability to select which track you want to play. The songs themselves come with visualisations which have been specially created to go along with the beats in a great 8-bit style. Here's a video.

While the Famicom and original NES were pretty similar consoles, differences in the cartridge slot mean you won't be able to play this in a machine from anywhere outside Japan. There's no word yet on an international release, but there seems to be a lot of interest already and we wouldnt be surprised to see a NES version over the next few months.
