Huawei Watch D3: The medical-grade blood pressure smartwatch that actually works

Most smartwatches are essentially fitness trackers, which are great for counting steps or checking your sleep, but when it comes to serious health metrics like blood pressure, they often rely on "estimates" using light sensors. That’s why the Huawei Watch D3 is such an interesting device for people who need to check their blood pressure regularly. The Watch D3 doesn't just estimate your blood pressure; it tries to measure it properly.
What sets the Watch D3 apart from the competition is its mechanical airbag. Instead of just shining a light through your skin, the watch uses an innovative airbag strap to provide actual compression. It’s a clever bit of engineering that mimics the way a doctor would use a traditional cuff, providing a much more reliable reading.
Huawei says the device is "designed to provide accurate readings" through this combination of a high-precision sensor and an adaptive algorithm. It’s even been given the CE marking under the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR), which is a big deal if you’re looking for something with real clinical weight.

The 24-hour Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) follows the European Society of Hypertension guidelines, meaning it can take readings at intervals throughout the day and night. It also runs more quietly at night, so it won't jolt you awake every time it inflates.
They’ve also thought about the fitness crowd. It’s easy to forget how exercise affects your heart, so the D3 lets you take readings both before and after a workout. This helps you see how your body recovers, a brilliant way to catch irregularities early.
Despite all that heavy-duty tech, the watch isn't a bulky brick. At just 11.3mm thick and weighing 40g, it’s surprisingly slim and comfortable. I noticed the 25.5mm ultra-narrow airbag strap is designed to be unobtrusive, so you won't feel like you're wearing a piece of medical equipment all day.
Beyond blood pressure, you get a full suite of health tools. The "Health Glance" feature is a nice touch, giving you a report on 11 different indicators, including SpO2 and heart rate, in about 60 seconds.
Watch out for my full review in the coming weeks.
