Destiny 2 in the works for a 2016 release?
Destiny is a big game no matter what way you look at it and Bungie and Activision have been working hard to make it even bigger with frequent paid expansions including the recent The Taken King. But despite these companies previously committing to a five year plan for the franchise, it seems a sequel is already in the works.
As part of a massive and revealing investigation into the issues which plagued the last year of development of Destiny over on Kotaku (which is well worth a read) a hint was dropped a new developer entering the fold. It seems High Moon Studios have been brought into aid development on new content, specifically a fully fledged Destiny 2 set for release in 2016.
Activision had previously hinted at a possible release cycle for Destiny, with a full game followed by a major expansion a year later, then a full release again the following year. It's a good way of constantly delivering content and, not incidentally, getting a good amount of cash from fans who have to pay a premium for DLC as well as the new games themselves.
The use of another developer is interesting, especially amid reports that Bungie has been having terrible trouble shipping every Destiny product to date, particularly in the wake of a huge story shift in 2013. High Moon previously worked on Deadpool, some fun Transformers games and the last gen port of Advanced Warefare, not the greatest CV for helping out on the biggest first person shooter around.
Still, maybe a bit of new blood might help to fix the many problems which Destiny still suffers from and who knows, it might actually live up to its potential by the time the five years have passed.
