Lenny Abrahamson's Room wins big at Toronto

The new drama, based on the book by Emma Donoghue, is about a young boy and his mother who live in Room - a tiny world that is all he has ever known. And the highly praised film has now earned the Audience Award at Toronto, a very high honour indeed and as it is directly voted for by the people on the groun at the festival.

Director Lenny Abrahamson said, ‘I am so honoured that ROOM has been chosen by the TIFF audience to win the Grolsch People's choice award. The program this year was full of extraordinary films, and for such a knowledgeable, film-loving audience to choose ours as their film of the festival is something of which I will always be hugely proud. It is a testament to the incredible talent and passion of all who made this film; cast and crew and those who backed us and had faith in us from the beginning. ‘

Previous winners of the Audience Award include 12 Years a Slave and The King's Speech - both movies which went on to do extremely well during the major awards season. That could mean there's potential for Oscar glory in the near future for the film, which stars Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay.

The early reviews for Room have also been stunning, suggesting Abrahamson's latest is a truly unique film - hardly surprising from the director of Frank and Garage. The story was adapted by original author Donoghue and the film was co-produced by Irish outfit Element Pictures.

Room is in cinemas in Ireland on the 29th of january 2015.
