Google's modular smartphone pushed back to 2016

The smartphone, which lets users customise its internal components, was scheduled for release in Peurto Rico later this year. But Google recently stated that it would no longer launch there and would follow up with more details.

Google stayed true to its word with a series of tweets today. Unfortunately, they don’t go into specific details.

The Project Ara Twitter account opened the dialogue by saying that it is looking at a few locations in the US. It followed that up by stating that the modular smartphone will be released in 2016.

As for the cause of the delay Project Ara said, “Lots of iterations... more than we thought.”

That’s about all the information we have for the moment. It didn’t reveal when in 2016 we might see the handset or a ballpark for how many different iterations will be available.
