iOS 9's battery-saving mode will slow down your iPhone

iOS 9’s Low Power battery-saving mode will extend the life of your iPhone, but will reduce performance significantly.

iOS 9's battery-saving mode will slow down your iPhone

Benchmark tests showed that without Low Power activated, the iPhone 6 Plus scored 1606 on the single-core processor test and 2891 on the multi-core processor test. When Low Power was then turned on, the same handset’s scores dropped to 1019 and 1751 respectively.

Results were similar when the test was conducted with an iPhone 5s. Its performance was reduced by around 40% in a bid to conserve battery.

iOS 9’s Low Power mode kicks in when an iPhone is at 10 or 20% battery level with users prompted by a popup that lets them toggle it on quickly. It can also be turned on from the new Battery section of a device’s settings.

As well as reducing CPU speeds, Mail Fetch, Background App Refresh, motion effects, and animated wallpapers are also disabled when Low Power is activated. It’s expected that Low Power can extend a handset’s life by up to three hours.

iOS 9 is currently available to developers and will be released to iOS users at large this autumn.
