Thousands of Minecraft fans targeted by scareware
Online security firm Eset found that there are more than 30 Minecraft related apps on the Google Play Store that use banner advertising to scare the user into installing malware under the guise of anti-virus software.The apps promise cheats for Minecraft. Unfortunately, the reality is much worse. The malicious apps actually charge the user €4.80 by SMS per weekly if they click the link and activate the “anti-virus” program.These apps have managed to bypass Google’s Bouncer screener program over the past nine months. It’s believed that they have been downloaded between 660,000 and 2.8 million times by unsuspecting Minecraft fans.The Eset researchers believe that the apps were created by one person. They found that the identified apps behave in the same way despite being uploaded by different developer accounts.
