BBC announces GTA drama Game Changer starring Daniel Radcliffe
The drama will star Daniel Radcliffe as Rockstar co-founder Sam Houser, with Bill Paxton assuming the role of disbarred lawyer Jack Thompson. Game Changer will, according to the BBC, tell the story of “an extraordinary chapter in the history of this iconic game, and reveals the major impact it has had on our cultural landscape."Game Changer will be a 90-minute drama telling the story of Grand Theft Auto, which the BBC describes as “arguably the greatest British coding success story since Bletchley Park.” It goes on to say, “Its triumph was down to a bunch of British gaming geniuses who had known each other since their school days, and at the heart of it all was GTA’s creative mastermind, Sam Houser.”It has been an incredibly successful franchise – the latest entry, Grand Theft Auto V, earned around $1 billion in its first three days on sale. But this success has not been without a fair share of controversy. The synopsis says, “But the violent gameplay coupled with its outstanding commercial success leads to fierce opposition: from parents worried about children immersing themselves in such a violent world; from politicians, alarmed at the values they say it encourages; and above all from moral campaigners, who fight passionately to ban it. At the vanguard of this crusade is the formidable campaigning lawyer Jack Thompson, a man determined to do whatever he can to stop the relentless rise of Grand Theft Auto.” As you’d expect, Thompson will play a key role in this drama.The broadcaster did not say when Game Changer will air.BBC Two just announced a factual drama called Game Changer, which is based on the development of GTA. It will star Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton.
