200 R&D jobs for Galway as Cisco Systems announces €40m investment
The company said 50 highly-skilled software engineers will be employed in the next few months and the remaining jobs will be added over the next three years.
Cisco said it will be looking for both graduates, those with Masters degrees and higher and experienced workers to fill the posts. It will also look at collaborating on research projects with Irish universities.
The company, which has more than 50,000 employees worldwide, said the Galway centre will be working on the design of produces for its Unified Communications business.
The company develops products that allows communication systems to operate more efficiently, such as the seamless routing of calls from fixed line to mobile phones.
Cisco said it is in discussions to find a suitable location to house the R&D centre near Galway city. It says it was attracted to Galway because of the availability of graduates from UCG and University of Limerick and also from the easy access to Shannon and Galway Airports.
The move is being supported by the IDA, which has been looking to attract more investment from Cisco to Ireland for some time. The company employs 66 people in Dublin in sales and international financing operation.
The jobs boost was welcomed by Enterprise, Trade & Employment Minister Micheál Martin.
“It is a further significant increase in the benchmark by which other global companies can judge Ireland’s abilities to successfully support cutting-edge highly sophisticated technological R&D and of our ability to provide the required numbers of the most knowledgeable and skilled graduates for today’s global businesses.
“Cisco has been a major target company for IDA Ireland for quite some time and the location of this R&D centre here was achieved against strong competition.”
