A product recall has been issued for a knitted baby sleeping nest sold in shops in Ireland after a warning it could lead to suffocation during sleep.

SAOL Knitwear is carrying out a recall of the Baby Aran Sleeping Nest, which was sold in retailers across Ireland and online. The product was sold over the past three years. 

"This product presents a risk of suffocation. Due to its design and structure, it may obstruct a baby’s breathing, which can lead to serious injury," a statement from SAOL Knitwear said.

The product was sold in these retailers:

• O’Briens Crafts and Knitwear 
• Paddywagon Limerick 
• Quinns Craftshop & Sweater Shop 
• SHEEP & WOOL CENTRE 
• Sue’s Limited 
• Village Crafts

There are approximately 121 affected products in the Republic of Ireland. "The product presents a risk of suffocation. The hood of the sleeping nest may cover the nose and/or mouth of the baby for a prolonged period during sleep, creating a risk of suffocation," said the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.

The SAOL Knitwear stock-keeping unit (SKU) numbers of the affected products are NK200-004-OS, NK200-332-OS, NK200-525-OS, NK200-687-OS, though the CCPC said the SKU numbers of the retailers listed above may differ from that of SAOL Knitwear.

The company urged any consumers who may have purchased one of the sleeping nests to stop using the product immediately, and to contact them at [e-mail] to arrange a refund or replacement product.
