Irish athletics star and European champion Ciara Mageean has died following her public battle with cancer.

In a statement shared on Instagram on Sunday morning, her family announced that she passed away at 6:30am surrounded by those closest to her.

"At 6:30am this morning, Ciara lost her battle with cancer surrounded by her loved ones.

"A beloved daughter, sister, wife, friend and inspiration to so many, she will be deeply missed.

"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam."

Ciara Mageean's dreams came true after she won her first European gold in 2024. However, just a few months later she received the devastating news she had bowel cancer.

Since then, she has bravely spoken about her cancer battle. Just last bank holiday weekend, she and her new husband Thomas Moran were pictured celebrating a second wedding at Darver Castle in Dundalk.

The news has prompted an outpouring of grief across the sporting community and beyond, with tributes flooding social media from fans, fellow athletes and friends, many describing her death as "heartbreaking".

Athletes and sports stars both here and globally have reacted to the death of the 34 year-old.

Olympic boxing hero Kelly Harrington posted: "Rest Easy Ciara, thinking of Ciaras husband and family, may god give you all strength in this time."

While Cork runner Phil Heaney wrote: "Truly the most amazing person!! ❤️ You will forever be an inspiration to so many people. We are going to miss you so much 💔 Rest in peace Ciara ❤️❤️"

Mageean's passing comes little more than two years after she fulfilled a lifelong ambition by winning her first European gold medal in 2024, cementing her place among Ireland's greatest athletes.

Widely regarded as one of Ireland's most accomplished middle-distance runners, Mageean inspired countless people both on and off the track through her determination, positivity and sporting achievements.

She is survived by her family, husband, friends and the many people whose lives she touched throughout her career.
