Sunday Times announces appointment of new editor
Kieran McDaid said it was an “honour” to join the Sunday Times.
Editor of the Irish Sun Kieran McDaid has been announced as the new editor of the Sunday Times Ireland edition.Â
In September, the newspaper announced that editor NĂłirĂn Hegarty would be standing down from her position after less than two years in the role. News Ireland, which owns The Sunday Times as well as the Irish Sun, said she was leaving her role to pursue another opportunity overseas.
She took up the role in October 2021 following the retirement of long-time editor Frank Fitzgibbon.
Mr McDaid, originally from Donegal, will now take up the role in the new year. He has been working for over 20 years across a variety of daily and weekly publications.Â
For the last seven-and-a-half years he has been editor of the Irish Sun.Â
Richard Bogie, managing director of News Ireland, said having worked with Mr McDaid for a number of years now he is “delighted” to “welcome him as Ireland Editor of The Sunday Times”.
"Kieran’s extensive journalistic knowledge and leadership experience makes him the perfect fit for this role as well as his focus on the ever-evolving digital transformation of the media industry,” Mr Bogie said.
Speaking on his appointment, Mr McDaid said it was an “honour” to join the newspaper. In this new role, Mr McDaid will work alongside Ben Taylor, editor of The Sunday Times and Tony Gallagher, editor of The Times.
News Ireland is owned by News Corp which is run by the Murdoch family. In September, Rupert Murdoch stepped down as chairman of the company.Â
