The pound lost steam but continued to hover near six-month highs as investors took an optimistic view of Prime Minister Theresa May's plans for a general election in June.

Sterling fell nearly 0.4% against the greenback to trade at 1.279, but was still hovering near its highest level since the start of October after reaching 1.29 yesterday evening.
