More than two thirds of public payphones could be scrapped by Eir because they are not being used enough.

There are 900 payphones around the country, with 621 being used for less than one minute a day.

Eir's contract says they are not obliged to keep the public phones on sites with usage that low.

The company told watchdog ComReg it has no plans to remove payphones at the moment, but it is not obliged to keep almost 70% of current public phones.
