Cork football round-up: Buttevant and Canovee cruise as late penalty seals Cobh victory

Cork IAFC: Buttevant 2-17 Glanworth 0-3 

Following last year’s promotion from Premier Junior, Buttevant got off to a flying start in the IAFC on Friday evening, hammering Glanworth in Kildorrery after a storming second half display.

They led 0-9 to 0-1 at the break, with Mark Lenahan and David Hanlon starring, as the pair finished with 2-1 and 0-8 (0-1 f) respectively.

Seamus Madigan and Michael O’Neill were on target early for Buttevant, and Glanworth started the second half well they couldn’t find the scores, and the couple of goals from Lenahan left no doubt as to would take the points.

Cork Premier JFC: Cobh 1-15 Inniscarra 0-16 

In the Premier Junior FC, Cobh edged out Inniscarra after a brilliant battle at Blarney.

Both sides had their spells of dominance in the opening period, Cobh had raced away early to lead 0-10 to 0-1 after 14 minutes, having kicked five straight orange flags. Then momentum swung and it was Scarra’s turn to take charge, with the Muskerry side knocking over seven white flags in a row, Liam O’Connor and Shay Dineen on target twice each in that spell.

By the break they remained separated by two, Cobh leading 0-12 to 0-10, with more drama still to come. Inniscarra were sharper on the restart and moved 0-15 to 0-13 clear, Cork hurler Sean O’Donoghue on target twice in that spell.

Both sides would go scoreless for ten minutes, before Cobh found parity. Then, in the 57th minute Diarmuid Kearney struck a penalty to take his tally to 1-4 and seal the win, despite Inniscarra’s late efforts.

Cork Premier JFC: Canovee 2-23 St Nick’s 0-9 

In the other PJFC affair, Canovee were dominant winners over St Nick’s, as James Moynihan and Conor Dodd starred, with four two pointers from Dodd in the latter half putting daylight between the teams.

Sub Seán O’Connor also impressed as he came off the bench to kick two points, while Eoghan Lehane was also brilliant throughout.

Another three points from Kelleher had the score at 0-9 to 0-2 by the break, with Patrick Buckley excellent at the back. But Canovee would power ahead in the second half to finish comfortable winners over last year’s beaten finalists.
