Retailers 'felling the pinch' from Brexit concerns

Retailers here have said they are already feeling the pinch caused by the Brexit vote in the UK.

Voters will go to the polls to decide whether or not the UK will leave the European Union on June 23.

IBEC has said the uncertainty around the ballot is having serious consequences for business people in the Republic.

Retail Ireland Director Thomas Burke has said the uncertainty around the future of trade agreements is causing real concern: “We don’t know what the implications might be practically on a day to day basis.

“Should the UK citizens take the decision to leave the European Union and it is really that uncertainty that is driving a lot of the concern.

“We have come out of six years of very difficult trading for the Irish retail sector and any uncertainty impacts upon the consumer.

“That uncertainty leads to reduced sales and that is hugely negative from a retail perspective.”
