Post Office renew contract to distribute social welfare payments

The Post Office network has renewed a contract which allows it to distribute cash social welfare payments.

Last year, the contract was worth around €54m, with over 38 million social welfare payments being made.

The current contract was signed in December 2013 for an initial period of two years, with an option for a four year extension.

Ned O’Hara is the General Secretary of the Irish Postmasters Union has said they are happy with the renewal: “Yes we are happy with the renewal because the contract did include some performance related clauses so the postmaster met whatever clauses were required,

“The fact that it is only for a year, again disappointed, but having said that, that was the terms of the contract when it was issued, it was issued for an initial two year period, with twelve month renewal period so while we welcome it it doesn’t solve any of our long-term issues.”
