Volkswagen 'most popular car brand' last month

Volkswagen was the most popular car brand in Ireland last month as figures show that overall car sales are up 35% on this time last year.

845 Volkswagens were sold here last month, even as the scandal over the company rigging diesel emissions tests emerged.

Overall almost 6,000 cars were licensed in September with Toyota, Ford and Nissan the next most popular brands according to new CSO figures.

Almost 3,750 used or imported cars were also licensed last month, a drop of 14.5% on 2014.
