Number of VW cars affected by scandal in Ireland revealed

It's understood that as many as 80,000 Irish cars could be affected by the diesel emissions scandal.

In Britain, figures released by Volkswagen this morning show 1.2m vehicles in the UK are affected. It includes VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda brands.

The company has said it will contact owners with details of how to get the software "corrected," although it reiterates all vehicles are technically safe.

The cheating software was fitted to a specific diesel engine range, known as EA189.

It is reported that the recall is likely to cost billions and that VW have come up with a fix that has to be approved by the German government.

The company has been given until October 7, by the German government, to come up with a solution and it is reported that they have it and are presenting it to the authorities.
