McDonald's objects to Supermac's attempt to register trademark
Fast food giant McDonald's has objected to the application by Supermac's to have its name trademark registered across the EU.
Irish-owned Supermac's has lodged a submission with the EU's Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market, after McDonald's lodged an objection against the company.
The Irish company, which opened its first restaurant in Ballinasloe in 1978, says it is responding to demands from 15 cities internationally to open more outlets.
The objection from McDonald's is based on its contention that the name "Supermac's" is similar to the name McDonald's, which may cause confusion for consumers if the Irish chain opens restaurants in other European counties.
