Aldi gains in consumer survey

Aldi has made the most gains in a recent survey on consumer spending.

The 'Where We Shop 2014' report surveyed 3,000 people and found that 37% were shopping more frequently in Aldi in the last 12 months, followed by Lidl which saw an increase of 29%.

When it comes to supporting Irish products, Supervalu is leading the way with 33% of shoppers saying they felt it was best for promoting Irish brands.

"SuperValu has performed very strongly in terms I terms of the perception of supporting Irish," said Stephen Wynne-Jones, editor with Checkout Magazine.

"Now obviously SuperValu has very strong community links, has very strong support for local producers, but also by bringing Superquinn into the fold, it's managed to really harness the goodwill that is felt towards Superquinn and it's almost emphasised its own Irish credentials."
