The man who many thought was favourite to succeed Ben Bernanke as the US Federal Reserve chairman has quit the race.

Larry Summers, a former US Treasury Secretary, said that any confirmation process for him was likely to be "acrimonious".

He has come under fire for his support for deregulation in the 1990s, blamed by some for causing the current global economic crisis.
