Survey reveals rise in women on company boardrooms

Women are playing a strong role in getting Ireland's economy back on track, according to a survey carried out by vision-net.ie.

The survey shows a 14% jump in the number of female company directors since the recession began.

The business and credit risk analyst company said the economic crash prompted more people, including women, to set up their own business.

Christine Cullen, Managing Director with vision-net, said having more women in the boardroom can provide more economic gains for businesses.

With the number of females in boardrooms on the rise, the group Women for Election are hoping to inspire more women to become involved in politics at a conference today which will mark International Women's Day.

Ireland currently ranks 25th out of 27 countries in the EU in terms of gender quotas in the Dáil.

Founder of the organisation, Michelle O'Donnell Keating said while female representation is low in politics, they're hoping new legislation will change that.
