MEPS vote in favour of 'robust' fracking guidelines
MEPs have voted in favour of "robust" rules governing shale oil and gas extraction - or fracking - in EU states.
European parliamentarians also urged EU states to be "cautious" about permitting exploitation of unconventional fossil fuels pending further analysis of whether EU-level regulations are appropriate.
Independent MEP Marian Harkin said the EU's Environment Commissioner this week admitted there were gaps in the laws concerning shale gas extraction.
"He has said he will do an impact assessment in 2013…That means everyone concerned will have an opportunity to present their views to the Commission," she said.
