Fears mount for Cork/Swansea ferry

There are mounting fears for the future of the ferry link between Cork and Swansea.

The High Court is expected to be told that the company involved has not raised sufficient funds to resume operations.

The MV Julia has been berthed in Cork city centre since an examiner was appointed to the operating company, the Fastnet Line, last year.

Cork's two local authorities had pledged €300,000 to save the ferry link, but a further €1m was needed from State agencies.

The examiner is due to report back to the High Court on whether that money had been raised, but it is believed those efforts have been unsuccessful.

The ferry service is worth around €30m to the south-west, and had already carried €153,000 passengers before running into financial trouble.
