Italy has successfully borrowed over €5bn from the financial markets this morning despite concerns about the country's ability to service its debts.

The interest rate that Italy has to pay on borrowed money has risen to record highs.

Later today, the Italian Senate is expected to pass an austerity budget which proposes €48bn of cuts and the sale of state assets.
