Ailing HMV was today thrown a lifeline by its lenders following a deal that will give Britain’s taxpayer-backed banks a stake in the retailer.

The group, which runs 266 HMV stores in the UK and Ireland, has secured a £220m (€247m) banking facility covering the next two years, lifting uncertainty over its immediate future.
