US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says Dominique Strauss-Kahn should no longer lead the IMF.

The 62-year-old is currently being detained in New York's notorious Rikers Island jail after being charged with sexually assaulting a hotel maid in Manhattan.

Strauss-Kahn is facing growing pressure to stand down.

It is understood the board of the IMF is trying to contact him to get his views on his post with one source saying it would be ideal if he resigned.
