Public sector working arrangements and entitlements are to be standardized to match those in the private sector.

Minister for Public Expenditure Reform Brendan Howlin, speaking at the IMPACT conference in the Brandon Hotel in Tralee, said the Government is "living on borrowed money to keep the lights on and the doors open".

He said "traditional, but over-generous entitlements and working conditions" that have built up over time in some sectors.

"I'll tell you frankly…It's hard to defend some of the practises."
