IBEC, the group that represents Irish business, has welcomed An Bord Pleanala’s approval of the final section of Shell E&P Ireland Corrib gas pipeline.

The group said the completion of the pipeline would benefit Ireland's energy infrastructure and secure local jobs and investment.

IBEC director of policy Brendan Butler said: "The Corrib Gas Project is crucial to Ireland’s energy infrastructure.

"Ireland is roughly 90% dependent on imported gas, exposing us to the risks of supply interruption and volatile prices.

"At full production Corrib could meet over 50% of national demand during its initial years of operation and have a field life of some 15 years. The development will create much-needed jobs in Mayo and will help meet our national energy needs."
