Regulations proposed for written-off vehicles

The Department of Transport and the Road Safety Authority are proposing regulations for vehicles which are written off.

They have launched a public consultation process, seeking the views of all interested parties on the development of the proposals.

The recommendations will contain a clear definition of which categories of write-off can be repaired, and those which can never be put back on the road.

There is also likely to be a recording process in place, so that a car's history will contain details of its damage.

Motorcheck, which gives car history checks, estimates that more than 100,000 vehicles are written off in Ireland every year, bur many are not properly notified to the relevant authorities.
