Unions to present pay cut proposal to building workers

Building unions are to present plans for a 7.5% wage cut to their members.

A meeting of construction representatives in Dublin today ended with the decision to put the Labour Court recommendations to union members in a ballot.

The plans were accepted yesterday by the Construction Industry Federation, which had initially sought wage cuts of up to 30%.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions maintain the pay cuts won't do anything to boost employment in the sector and will cause severe hardship for construction workers still in employment.

However, Industrial Officer with ICTU Fergus Whelan has said, now the deal has been accepted by the CIF, they will present them to construction staff.
