Union to discuss Eircom job loss reports

The Communications Workers Union is meeting later today to discuss the future direction of Eircom.

It follows reports up to 2,000 jobs are at risk in the telecoms firm

The company is believed to be in the midst of negotiations with unions representing their 7,000 about scaling back their operations

The move comes as Eircom tries to deal with debts of more than €3bn.

Since the amalgamation of Meteor and Eircom it is understood there is a duplication in roles that had previously had been carried out separately

The Minister for Enterprise and Trade Batt O'Keeffe has said he is aware of restructuring at Eircom, but has not been informed of job losses.

Sources within the company say it is likely any such job losses would be spread out over at least five years

The National Executive of the CWU will meet later to discuss Eircom's restructuring programme.

The union represents 18,000 workers in the telecommunications and postal sectors.
