Economist issues positive outlook

The Government's fiscal correction is beginning to work, according to Friends First economist Jim Power.

He said that although the amount of income tax collected by the state remains weak, stability is returning to our public finances.

Exchequer figures published yesterday show that the deficit at the end of May is almost €3bn smaller than this time last year.

However, this is being blamed on an extra payment to the pension fund in 2009.
