The FTSE 100 Index was mired in the red by noon today amid mixed economic figures and a tough session for commodity stocks.

There was little sign of any uplift from the rescue plan for Greece agreed over the weekend, as markets were spooked by a sudden fall-off in net mortgage lending despite further positive signs from manufacturers.
