US and Germany see decline in consumer confidence

Consumer confidence has fallen unexpectedly in both the United States and Germany.

A strong fall in the closely watched US Confidence Board indicator put business confidence in the world's largest economy back where it was last July.

Earlier today the IFO index for Germany's economy showed a more modest fall.

Analysts blame a cold January for halting the recovery.
