New editor for The Sun

Dominic Mohan has been appointed as the new editor of The Sun newspaper, it was announced today.

Mohan, a former editor of the paper’s Bizarre showbusiness pages, had been widely tipped to succeed Rebekah Brooks, who has edited The Sun since January 2003. Brooks was recently named as chief executive of News International.

Mohan has held the position of deputy editor since 2007 following a stint heading the features department in the years since he left Bizarre.

Mohan, 40, takes over as editor on September 2, with Brooks editing her last edition of The Sun the previous day.

He has worked on the title for 13 years, joining from sister paper the News Of The World, where he was a reporter.

Mohan said today: “It is a privilege to take over as editor and I cannot wait to get started.”

James Murdoch, chairman and chief executive, Europe and Asia, for The Sun’s parent group News Corporation, said: “Dominic has proved himself a very capable deputy to Rebekah, sharing her passion for campaigning journalism on the issues that connect with the country.

“I am very pleased to announce Dominic’s promotion and look forward to seeing him build on that success.”

Brooks said: “Dominic has been an outstanding leader at the paper, supporting me with energy and enthusiasm. I am delighted to be handing the reins over to such a talented successor.”
