M&S whistleblower loses unfair dismissals claim

A former Marks & Spencer worker sacked after telling the media about planned redundancy pay cuts, has lost his claim for unfair dismissal, it was learned today.

Tony Goode, 43, also claimed his dismissal breached his human rights and was backed by his union, the GMB, in a case at Central London Employment Tribunal.

A spokesman for M&S said: “We’re pleased with the outcome and we were confident in our case throughout the process. We obviously take these matters extremely seriously, but we’re glad to now draw a line under this.”

Maria Ludkin, the GMB’s legal officer said: “This is an extremely disappointing judgment. The fact that the tribunal took so long to consider the case demonstrates the complexities of the issues involved.”

The union said it was considering lodging an appeal.
